“Please tell me you’re seeing this too,” Rami Malek whispered when he won the 2016 Emmy for Best Drama Actor for playing computer hacker Elliot Alderson on USA’s “Mr. Robot.” That quote, which came directly from the show, inspired big laughs from the A-list audience at the Microsoft Theatre as the then-35-year-old held up his shiny statuette. Since Malek now contends for the Best Actor Oscar for 20th Century Fox’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” we thought we’d take a trip down memory lane and re-live his Emmy moment from two years ago. Watch the Emmys flashback video above.
“Thank you to the academy and everyone who gave me a chance to play this role,” Malek declared while wearing his snazzy white suite and black bow tie. “I am honored to be recognized with such a distinguished and accomplished group of actors.” His co-nominees that year were Kyle Chandler (“Bloodline”), Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”), Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”), Liev Schreiber (“Ray Donovan”) and Kevin Spacey (“House of Cards”).
Malek added, “I’m honored to stand here and represent my family and every single person who’s helped me get this far. I’m honored to work with a pure visionary in [creator] Sam Esmail. I wouldn’t be here without you.” Malek also thanked his “absurdly gifted cast” which includes Christian Slater, Carly Chaikin, Portia Doubleday and Martin Wallstrom.
“I play a young man who is I think like so many of us profoundly alienated,” Malek said about his quirky but lovable “Mr. Robot” character. “The unfortunate thing is, I’m not sure how many of us would want to hang out with a guy like Elliot. But I want to honor the Elliots. ‘Cause there’s a little bit of Elliot in all of us, isn’t there? Thank you!”
In “Bohemian Rhapsody” Malek portrays Queen front man Freddie Mercury, which could be right up Oscar’s alley as voters love when actors physically transform themselves on-screen. Malek’s transformation includes altering his voice and even wearing false teeth. Seven of the past 10 Best Actor winners played real-life people, so might Malek be next?
