Skateboarder Sky Brown has been such a positive, resilient presence on “Dancing with the Stars: Juniors” that no one could possibly want to see her unhappy. So her clip package during the Semi-Finals was a little tough to watch. Her mentor Alan Bersten wanted to challenge the young athlete with this week’s Argentine tango, which was already a stylistic change of pace for her. But maybe he pushed a bit too hard because at one point the pressure to execute all of his difficult lifts and tricks made her break down and cry. Did it all work out in the end? Watch her tango above.
Bersten was quick to comfort his charge, letting her know how well she was doing in the face of such difficult choreography, and Brown wasn’t down for long. By the end she exclaimed, as she has many times this season, “I never want this to end!” and she ultimately executed that tango with her usual aplomb. I will say, though, that perhaps Bersten could have scaled back the choreography. Brown and her pro partner JT Church were up to the challenge, but I think the tricks impeded some of the natural flow of the routine.
But that’s just me. The judges were over the moon. Adam Rippon said, “You killed it tonight.” Val Chmerkovskiy told her she has “the power to change the course of what people imagine” about dance. And Mandy Moore loved her “100-percent” commitment to the routine, though she still thinks Brown needs to point her toes more. The performance received a 9 from Moore but 10s from Rippon and Chmerkovskiy for a total of 29 out of 30. That tied her season’s best score, so despite that rough patch while training, the unbreakable Sky soldiered on. And since there was no elimination at the end of the Semi-Finals, she might soldier on all the way to the Mirror Ball Trophy.
